One of the best things about the summer is having the chance to jet off to warmer climes and explore exotic destinations. Around 58% of Brits head abroad during the summer months, with most flying to their far flung destinations. Flying has helped to make the world a smaller place, with even the most exotic destinations now just a few hours away.
However, if you have a fear of flying, the impending summer holidays may well fill you with terror instead of excitement. Where other people are counting down the days until they get on that plane, you’re probably trying to think up excuses that will get you out of the holiday altogether.
Fear of flying
Fear of flying is also known as aviophobia, aerophobia and flight phobia. It normally starts in childhood or in a person’s mid-twenties and generally affects women more than men. Fear of flying is incredibly common, with around 20-30% of the population apprehensive about getting on a plane and 2-10% of people living with a phobia of flying.
This fear can take the form of intense anxiety at the thought of getting on a plane, while some people may also experience panic attacks if they try to jet off on holiday.
As with many phobias, there are no clearcut causes for a fear of flying. Some people can develop a phobia after a particularly bad flight, with turbulence, loud noises and pain caused by pressure changes making the experience unpleasant. Those who experience a traumatic flight may well go on to dwell on thoughts relating to the flight, and some people can begin to obsess about possible accidents and other things that can go wrong.
Some people can learn a fear of flying from a close friend or relative, while others are predisposed to phobias because of their personality.
If you suffer from a fear of flying, you don’t have to let your phobia ruin your summer holiday. Hypnotherapy is very successful at treating fear of flying, with trained and experience hypnotherapists working with patients to help them change the way they think about flying and giving them coping strategies to manage their fears when they do finally get on a plane.
By working closely with a hypnotherapist, rental of minibus, you can begin to overcome your fear, getting your life – and your choice of holiday destinations – back in the process.
